Just one month after announcing that our New Jersey data centers will be 100% powered by renewable energy we can proudly say we are partners in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (E.P.A.’s) Green Power Partnership. The purchase of nearly nine million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, that now powers our Somerset-One facility, has qualified us for such an honor. The data center became powered solely on renewable energy resources immediately following the purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) through Constellation NewEnergy. This purchase demonstrates our proactive choice to switch away from traditional sources of electricity generation and support cleaner, renewable energy alternatives. As Robb (Datapipe CEO Robb Allen) has said previously, “Investing in sustainable energy is the right thing to do for our kids, our community and our clients.” We are all proud of this announcement and look forward to the further Greening of Datapipe.

We can't imagine many announcements more important than the one we made on March 24th, 2010. Datapipe has implemented an aggressive sustainability strategy that results in the annual reduction of more than 8.5 million pounds of carbon emissions. The electricity powering our Somerset, New Jersey data center, known as Somerset One, comes from 100% renewable resources. The primary source of this electricity is wind power. Constellation NewEnergy made this possible through their NewMix Wind Energy solution that utilizes Green-e certified renewable energy certificates.
The importance of more efficient uses of energy is reflected in recent statistics regarding power consumption in the IT Industry. The EPA estimates that data centers account for 1.5 percent of the nation's electricity consumption and they estimate that figure will increase 12% annually due to demand for digital resources.
We have a responsibility to support long-term sustainability through the technologies we implement and the electricity we consume. Converting to 100% renewable electricity sources is a big win for our clients, our company and our community. You know that you are at the forefront of innovation when your efforts are recognized as being "visionary" and that is exactly what Constellation NewEnergy Vice-president Keith Black had to say about Datapipe and CEO Robb Allen.
In April of 2010 Datapipe will open Somerset Three. This facility will go online deriving 100% of its power from renewable resources, furthering our commitment to the environment and sustainability. Datapipe is committed to being directly involved in the reduction of carbon emissions and the advancement of efficient energy use.

You get a request to export a bunch of tables into a spreadsheet file. Sure there are ODBC connectors available for spreadsheets, but sometimes you don't want to have to figure all that out. This is where the power and simplicty of scripting languages can really shine, especially those that treat data as lists. Sure the following code block seems cryptic to a non-programmer, but it is really not that hard.
To solve this problem in less than 5 minutes I put together this piece of TCL code. It requires Tcl, and 2 of the support packages that are available for it: tcllib and Oratcl
This little script will take a list of tables and generate a [tablename].csv file for each one. The data in the csv file will be comma separated, and quoted. The first line of the output file will contain the column names.
#
# table_to_csv.tcl
#
#!/usr/local/tcl86/bin/tclsh8.6
package require Oratcl
package require csv
set lda [oralogon scott/tiger@database] set stm
[oraopen $lda] set tblList [list TABLE1 TABLE2 TABLE3]
proc csvjoin {values {sepChar ,} {delChar \"}} {
set out ""
set sep {}
foreach val $values {
append out $sep${delChar}[string map [list $delChar ${delChar}${delChar}] $val]${delChar}
set sep $sepChar
}
return $out
}
foreach tbl $tblList {
puts $tbl
set t [open ${tbl}.csv w+]
oraparse $stm "select * from ${tbl}"
puts $t [csvjoin [oracols $stm name]]
oraexec $stm
while {[orafetch $stm -datavariable row] == 0} {
puts $t [csvjoin $row]
}
close $t
}
Now sure, you could do this with perl or python or even 'C'. But then again, you would not be using my favorite scripting language.
